How to break a "speaking barrier"
why you understand everything but can't speak
"A speaking barrier" is when you know a lot but can't speak. People often feel very sad because of this problem. They can even stop learning English because of it!
"But why does it happen? And how to break it?"
One dangerous idea is that you just don't know enough. Learning more words and grammar will not help you start speaking!
Speaking is a skill. You need to choose words, form sentences, think about your ideas, make sounds and listen to another person. And you have to do it all fast.
The only way to start speaking is practice.
"You can train your speaking skills in the same way as you train muscles in the gym".
What do you do in the gym? You start from something easy, practise and slowly make the exercises more difficult.
But you can't train your legs by doing arm exercises. And you can't practise speaking by learning new words. You have to speak. There's no other way to break the "speaking barrier".
"What can I do if speaking is too difficult?"
It's okay! You just have to start from something easy.
Here are some ideas that we use during the lessons:
  • Speak about easy things like family, weather, home, hobbies.
  • Talk slowly and ask your teacher to do the same.
  • Play some easy speaking games.
  • Try to learn and repeat some text or audio.
  • Start seeing words in sentences, stop just learning them in Spanish.
  • Work on sounds. It will help you feel more comfortable!

Speaking practice with a teacher has many pluses.
A teacher can help you, give you some interesting exercises, correct mistakes and talk slowly.
"You can't learn to speak without practice! But you can make the learning easier for you".
If you want to start your individual speaking practice course, book a free lesson. The first two lessons are free, so you can test your English level and try the course.
